RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION FOR CHILDREN:
What is RCIC ? RCIC is a program designed for children who have not received the sacraments of Christian initiation - Baptism, First Eucharist, and Confirmation. RCIC is preparation for these Sacraments and for reception into the Roman Catholic Church at the Easter Vigil. The sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession, Penance) is celebrated before Easter.
When do classes meet and what is covered? Classes will be scheduled at a mutually agreed upon time. Classes will begin in September and end prior to Easter Vigil. We will focus on the sacraments, faith community, service, prayer and basic beliefs and practices during specified class times.
When will children receive the sacraments? All students who are ready will receive the sacraments at the Easter Vigil - the Saturday night before Easter.
How do I enroll my child? Enrollment for RCIC occurs simultaneously with enrollment for Faith Formation. Complete the Faith Formation Registration form and submit the completed form to our office.
What is required of a child in RCIC? Regular attendance at Mass and Sunday classes as well as active participation in class discussions and activities. All children will need a sponsor who is a practicing Catholic and member of the Catholic Church who will be able to be present at the Easter Vigil. If the family is unable to find a sponsor for the child, we will help find a good match within the parish. Your child must be enrolled in Faith Formation class or attend St. Simon the Apostle school.
The RCIC team includes not only the RCIC teachers, but most importantly, the RCIC parents. The true success of the program depends on the parents. The parent must insure the child attends all classes, learns their prayers, and experiences a Catholic environment at home.
